Alcohol detox at DayBreak rehab centers takes place in our luxury facility in the countryside of Philadelphia. We meet with each client before treatment begins to evaluate what types of medical treatments you will need, whether you require dual diagnosis for mental health issues, medication assisted treatment (MAT), and whether there is anything else we can do to help you get back on your feet and meet your recovery goals once you move into a customized rehab program.
Detoxing from alcohol is not easy, but in the DayBreak Trenton treatment center we do all we can to ensure you feel comfortable and safe throughout your treatment. With a maximum of two patients per room and full-sized beds with your own TV, you will feel at home in our detox treatment center. Every client who is detoxing at DayBreak also has access to amenities like a holistic spa, massage therapy, salon services, and a movie theater.
What To Expect During Detox?
At DayBreak recovery center for substance abuse treatment and drug addiction treatment, we have each patient move into our inpatient detox center for anywhere from 3 to 10 days on average. Each person is given a customized medical detox program that includes:
- Medical treatments
- 24-hour nursing care overseen by a medical doctor
- Psychological care and counseling
- Medications to reduce anxiety, pain, restlessness, and alcohol cravings
How Long is Detox?
The length of detox varies from person to person, depending on your biological makeup, how long and how much you have been drinking, whether you have used other drugs alongside the alcohol, and your history of relapsing, alcohol use and drug use.
Detox for alcohol abuse does not follow a specific timeline, but in general:
- In the first 6-12 hours you will begin to feel headaches, have stomach issues, and experience anxiety and insomnia
- Between 12-48 hours after your last drink your symptoms will likely get worse, and you may feel distress, pain, and feverish. This is when many people tend to relapse, as drinking may feel easier than going through these symptoms
- Between 48-72 hours is the most dangerous time for most people. This is when delirium tremens will begin to show, with hallucinations, confusion, and seizures, often requiring medical intervention to stay safe and healthy
- Once the peak of your symptoms have subsided you will begin to feel a bit better each day, and after around 7-10 days you will be medically stable enough to move on to your inpatient rehab program
Symptoms of Alcohol Detox
Common side effects of alcohol withdrawal as the body removes toxins from your system include:
- Uncontrollable sweating
- Tremors and shaky hands
- Nausea and vomiting
- Brain fog
- Insomnia
- Increased heart rate
- Anxiety
- Irritability
- Headaches
- Restlessness
- Intense cravings for alcohol
It is never recommended to try quitting alcohol without medical supervision in a treatment facility, even if you believe your addiction is mild. Every person’s time in detox is different and your body may react more or less severely than other people. The withdrawal symptoms can cause sudden changes in brain activity causing seizures and delirium tremens, which may cause brain damage, coma, and even death in some cases.
Acute Detox
Acute detox is an inpatient detox program for people who may require medical treatment, 24-hour monitoring, psychiatric care, and physical health care due to intense withdrawal symptoms. In the case of alcohol detox, the most serious withdrawal symptoms include seizures and delirium tremens, otherwise known as “DTs”, which are a series of dangerous symptoms of withdrawal that include:
- Agitation and confusion
- High fever
- Seizures
- Auditory hallucinations (hearing things that are not there)
- Visual hallucinations (seeing things that are not there)
- Tactile hallucinations (feeling sensations of something crawling under your skin)
- The possibility of death
Alcohol detox often requires acute detoxification programs because the symptoms can escalate quickly, without warning. Being in a fully capable medical facility surrounded by professional, experienced staff and caregivers will ensure you remain safe and comfortable in the case of serious side effects due to withdrawal.
Sub-Acute Detox
Sub-acute detox is a lighter level of detox program for those who only have a mild addiction to alcohol, and who are not experiencing serious physical withdrawal symptoms or co-occurring psychological issues like PTSD or dual diagnosis conditions like bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder, depression, and other mental illness. Like acute detox, it can take anywhere from days to weeks to complete a sub-acute detox program. Each person’s detox is completely customized to their unique needs as an individual and we never provide unnecessary treatments.
Although inpatient detox is always recommended, as it will keep you in a 100% sober living in Trenton, away from everyday stress and the temptation to relapse, sub-acute detox may also take place in an outpatient environment in some cases.
