National Recovery Month

What is National Recovery Month?

33 years ago, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) started National Recovery Month with a simple goal, to increase awareness regarding drugs and alcohol abuse and mental health treatments. They highlighted the impact of 12-step programs, community groups and non-profit organizations on addiction rates, and listed available treatment resources for anyone needing help.

Their work initiated efforts to remove the stigma from drug abuse, making it more likely for addicts to ask for help and enter treatment programs. SAMSHA did this by having real addicts share their personal recovery , as well as the treatment professionals devoted to their care and who witness miracles every single day. This legacy continues, aided by advances in mobile technology.

In a speech delivered outside Independence Hall, President Biden kicked off this year’s efforts by acknowledging the heavy toll of the ongoing opioid crisis on our communities, our families and friends, and ourselves. He also reminded us of his promise to make the crisis a key pillar of his Unity Agenda, pointing out the record funds set aside for harm reduction strategies, treatment, and equipping law enforcement in their fight to shut down the drug supply at its source.

How To Get Involved in National Recovery Month in Philadelphia

There’s a wide range of opportunities to show your support for NRM around Philly. You can choose from the suggestions below, or start one of your own.

  • Take a class – Learn how to perform harm reduction procedures so you can help someone in the event of overdose.
  • True colors – Purple is the official color of NRM. Show your support with ribbons, housewares, outdoor lighting, or official merchandise, all in the month’s most hopeful shade.
  • Open house – If you have questions about a loved one or your own use, many treatment facilities host events where you can drop in and get some answers. It’s a good way to familiarize yourself with the process of addiction treatment, what it means to be an addict, how mental illness fits into the equation, or the difference between rehab centers, outpatient rehab, and partial hospitalization.
  • Join an organization – A number of orgs online focus exclusively on the challenges facing people with substance abuse issues or mental illness. Share your own story, or learn about others who’ve been affected by the same.
  • Spread the word – You’ll find plenty of social media banners, backgrounds, and other assets to let your network know this is an important issue.

For more ideas, head over to your local, county, or state government sites for a list of scheduled events near you.
