Symptoms of Detox by Drug Type
Each type of addictive substance has its one set of withdrawal effects. Benzos
When someone goes through withdrawal syndrome when they are addicted to benzos, or benzodiazepines, can be affected by restless sleep, irritability, anxiety, panic attacks, shaking hands or tremors, excessive sweating, difficulty in concentrating, nausea, possible weight loss, palpitations, and headaches.
Opioids (Heroin)
Opioid detox can cause an individual several severe withdrawal symptom and although it is always better to go through the process in an inpatient treatment center for anyone struggling with substance use disorders, we highly recommend residential care for opioid addiction treatment. Symptoms of opioid withdrawal include anxiety, nausea, vomiting, fast heart rate or abdominal pain. While symptoms can be severe, they aren’t life-threatening.
Stimulants (Cocaine, Meth, etc.)
Cocaine detox, among other types of stimulants, can cause a wide variety of symptoms. Anyone struggling with substance use disorders will feel the need to use again once they stop, but this category of drugs in particular causes Intense cravings. Additionally, individuals can have difficulty sleeping, loss of cognitive functions, extreme mood swings, chills, body aches, tremors, and fatigue.
Bath Salts
Drug addicts are often looking for new ways to get high and some have turned to designer drugs, including in the bath salts category. Some of the symptoms people experience when they go through withdrawal syndrome are lethargy, fatigue, depression, anxiety, slow thinking, feelings of foggy-headedness, nightmares, muscle aches, suicidal thoughts, and the inability to focus.
Marijuana
Over the years, the misconception that marijuana is not addictive has continued to spread. The fact is that marijuana can be addictive, and if you stop using it, you may experience withdrawal effects. Some withdrawal symptoms are diminished appetite, mood changes, irritability and sleep difficulties.
DXM/Cough Syrup
Someone using dextromethorphan or DXM as directed will most likely not become addicted and will not experience withdrawal symptoms when they stop using the medication. When someone is using this over-the-counter medication to get high, when they stop, bone or muscle aches. Other signs and symptoms of dextromethorphan withdrawal include cold flashes, diarrhea, and vomiting symptoms.
Ecstasy/Molly/MDMA
Ecstasy, also referred to as Molly or MDMA is a party drug that has been used by millions of people around the globe. The drug is not highly addictive, but prolonged use can result in dependence and withdrawal symptoms when a long-time user stops taking the substance. Withdrawal symptoms during drug detox can include fatigue, depression, panic attacks, irritability, and anxiety.
Fentanyl
Opioid detox programs have now had to add Fentanyl to the substances that they treat. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Withdrawal symptoms people experience during opioid detox from Fentanyl include bone, joint, and muscular pain and spasms, insomnia and anxiety and excessive sweating and runny nose.
Hallucinogens
There are substances in the hallucinogens category that we treat at our drug rehab centers that do not result in withdrawal symptoms. However, PCP and others can produce effects during drug detox that include depressed breathing, convulsions, rapid heart rate, and extreme changes in body temperature.
Oxycodone
Oxycodone Is another substance we treat patients for at our alcohol and drug inpatient rehab facilities. It is in the opioid family and is often prescribed in combination with other medications. When you stop taking Oxycodone and begin opioid detox, some of the things you will experience are increased heart rate, body aches and pains, irritability, poor concentration, mood swings, and the inability to feel pleasure.

Prescription drugs is a very large category of substances that can be abused in multiple ways and the withdrawal symptoms can vary greatly, from changes in your mood to gastrointestinal issues to sleeplessness and restlessness.
